Which size should you use where?

The size you choose depends on how the paving will be used, the loads it needs to withstand and the appearance you want to create. Let’s start with load and traffic intensity.

Heavy traffic places greater loads on pavers than slow or no traffic, requiring either a higher or more robust paver. For heavier traffic, choose a paver with a height of at least 70 mm. This is suitable for residential areas with mainly local traffic, while 80 mm is often used for heavier and more intensive traffic.

Lower-height street pavers can be used for cycle paths, footpaths and low-traffic pedestrian areas. Using lower pavers contributes to dematerialisation and the circular economy.

Long, narrow pavers such as the 50 mm size are less suitable for heavy traffic, as they can become loose more easily due to lateral forces. Their header-to-stretcher ratio is less robust. For water-permeable paving, you can choose between the Drainflow® DF size 80 and KF size 80.

The dimensions determine the look

The ratio between the length and width of a paver determines the overall appearance of the paving. A long, narrow paver has an elegant character, giving an open space a refined look. Amsterdam’s Haarlemmerplein, with its monumental gatehouse, was paved with 50 mm size pavers for precisely this reason. A shorter, wider paver creates a more robust streetscape. The Dutch city of The Hague, for example, chose Kei size pavers for Hellingweg in Scheveningen. Their robust appearance reflects the character of the shipyards and fish market in the area. The DF size is commonly used in public spaces in the Netherlands, creating a familiar and traditional appearance.

Select your size

There are a number of considerations that determine which size of paver is the most suitable. The following overview will help you to come to a decision. You can always contact your advisor for advice.

Whichever size you choose, remember that the sustainability of the final streetscape depends on the interaction between size, laying pattern, joints and substructure. Has the foundation depth been calculated correctly for the expected traffic load? Have the joints been completely filled? Has an appropriate laying pattern been used? Prevent damage to the pavers and uneven paving.

Linge® large size

Linge® large pavers are unique to Vandersanden. With a length of 245 mm, they give public spaces a completely different appearance. As these pavers are larger than familiar standard sizes, they help create a calmer streetscape. Their sleek shape creates an elegant appearance. In addition, the Linge® size helps reduce maintenance thanks to the lower number of joints. The Houthavens project used the LF 80/80 size to achieve a robust industrial appearance.
