Haarlemmerplein (NL): a jewel in the capital

For many years, Amsterdam’s Haarlemmerplein was little more than a shabby parking area with shadowy corners and untidy taxi ranks. Following a fundamental redesign in 2013, Amsterdam now has a newly remodelled Haarlemmerplein.

A lavish fountain and stylish clay pavers

The design is understated, but modest means have still helped to create a comfortable urban space for people to enjoy. A lavish fountain forms the centre piece of the square, surrounded by a carpet of clay pavers in 50 mm size produced by Vandersanden.

Improved traffic situation

Where once a shabby parking lot, unused residual space and a messy taxi stand determined the use and atmosphere of the square, now there is a beautiful open space, where the weather is almost homely. It is often crowded, every Wednesday there is a market with high quality food.

Many residents and tourists make use of the square to relax. This success is inextricably linked to the pièce de resistance of the design, namely a fountain (designed by Drazen Bokan) in the middle of the square. An irresistible tractor, especially for children. Sometimes the designer of a square doesn't have to do too much. An open space and a strategically situated object can do wonders.

The materialization of the square is modest but robust. Bicycle parking has largely been solved with painted compartments in which bicycles are to be placed.

The traffic situation on the square has considerably improved.  Especially the intersection with bicycle and car traffic between the square and Marnixstraat has become more compact and safer. Through traffic is no longer possible from Haarlemmerplein to Haarlemmerdijk. The profile of Marnixstraat has been adjusted here, one-way traffic has been introduced for cars, while cyclists have their own two-way bike path, which has been continued along the west side of the square. This is where the taxi stand is now located.

The design for the square can be called modest in terms of layout, design and materialization, although the fountain does have an exuberant appearance but the effect on the use of public space is spectacular. Apart from improving bicycle traffic safety this part of the city has become an attractive place to stay and meet, which Amsterdam will enjoy for a long time to come.
