Sand-covered or unsanded pavers?
Pavers have either a sand-covered or unsanded surface. Sand was traditionally needed to help the clay come out of the mould. Without sand, the moulded bricks would get stuck.
Create an eye-catching public space
Today, we have techniques that allow us to use water to pull the forms neatly out of the moulds. These unsanded pavers give public spaces a completely different look and feel when compared to sand-covered pavers.
Sand-covered pavers
Sand-covered pavers have a robust character. The colour of the sand determines the look of the paver. We make our pavers with silver sand, red sand, purple sand, and black sand. Over time, the sand will wear and the fragment colour of the brick will come through. We supply sand-covered pavers in A4-12 quality which are highly dimensionally stable: EQ+ dimensional stability.
Unsanded pavers
Unsanded pavers aren’t quite as straight, as the lack of sand means that they are slightly trickier to get out of the moulds and need to be pulled. This creates a more nostalgic look than sand-covered pavers. The quality of unsanded pavers is therefore A4-12G. This gives you a rustic and even more natural streetscape. Unsanded pavers tend to fit better with existing paving in terms of their colour and appearance. Tumbled versions look more like old brick and match seamlessly with older streetscapes.
Sand-covered and unsanded extruded pavers
Extruded pavers are also available as sand-covered and unsanded versions.
There are two types of unsanded extruded paver: scraped and smooth.
