Energy efficiency
Energy efficiency is a key component of our Together to Zero programme. By continuously optimising our firing and drying processes, we are systematically reducing both our energy consumption and our CO₂ emissions. In doing so, we focus on smart process innovations and maximising heat reuse, both today and as we work towards the factory of tomorrow.
We are already turning this ambition into tangible results at several production sites. By using modern kiln and drying technology, we are achieving significant energy savings and CO₂ reductions without compromising on quality or performance.
Energy-efficient brick kiln in Tolkamer
To limit the environmental impact of our firing and drying process, we invested in an energy-efficient tunnel kiln for pavers in Tolkamer. With a length of 240 metres and a stacking height of 80 centimetres, it replaces three older 140-metre tunnel kilns whilst guaranteeing the same production capacity. Thanks to the longer tunnel and the excellently insulated walls, roof and pipework, this kiln suffers less heat and energy loss than a conventional kiln. It also utilises the latest firing techniques. This combination of technology and insulation makes it one of the most innovative and energy-efficient kilns in Europe. Compared with its predecessors, it emits 25% less CO₂, resulting in an annual saving of 5,000 tonnes of CO₂ when used optimally.
Steam drying technology in Beek
With an investment of €35 million and an EIA grant of €850,000, Vandersanden took a significant step towards sustainable brick production at its site in Beek, which produces up to 35 million bricks annually. 75% of the factory has been modernised, with a focus on energy efficiency, lower emissions and future-proofing. The steam drying technology, through which Vandersanden is setting a new standard in the sector, forms the core of the modernisation. Whereas conventional drying rooms use hot air and natural gas, the one in Beek operates using superheated steam, generated from residual heat from the kiln and electric heat pumps. The result: drying is 30% faster and CO₂ emissions from the production site have fallen by 25%.
Environmental targets achieved
Climate neutral by 2050
Our efforts in energy efficiency form part of a broader approach to structurally reducing our carbon footprint. Through four strategic pillars, we are working with partners, customers and colleagues towards a future-proof, climate-neutral brick industry by 2050.
