Wirecut pavers in Beesel (NL)

Wirecut pavers are usually associated with the sleek and modern. Many projects that use this type of stone aim for precisely this look, such as in Helmond’s Spoorzone. Beesel’s centre plan demonstrates how a public space with wirecut paving can also look very different.

Rustic appearance

Eric Hunnekens was the project manager for the centre plan for the city of Beesel. ‘We needed a suitable layout to go with the authentic buildings in the centre,’ he explains. ‘The centre needed an upgrade. We wanted to use clay pavers with a completely rustic appearance to fit in alongside the antique-look lighting columns and natural stone kerbs. A tumbled wirecut paver from the Vandersanden plant in nearby Kessel ultimately proved to be the perfect choice. In conjunction with specific green amenities, together they form a nice united combination.’

Tumbled sand-covered and wirecut pavers

‘Sand-covered wirecut paving has a smoother texture than sand-covered moulded pavers, immediately after they have been laid. Combined with tumbling, it gives the impression that they have been part of the centre’s road surfaces for years, and have weathered naturally. This is really good if you want to achieve an authentic look.’

A traditional combination of colours

For the paving, they opted for a traditional combination of colours. Eric explains, ‘The colour of the wirecut types fits well with the two moulded types that we decided to use for the cycling and parking areas. To enhance the rustic appearance , we opted for anthracite for the parking areas and for red to clearly delineate the cycle paths. Both are traditional elements.’
