Realising future dreams
The housing market, which is becoming ever tighter, a growing labour shortage, more and more stringent guidelines for building producers and a climate-neutral future. These are the most important trends in the construction sector and, at the same time, our greatest challenges. For us, looking ahead means realising our dreams for the future. And we would rather do the latter today than tomorrow.
CO2-negative bricks
Vandersanden was the first brick manufacturer to switch to the production of ECO brick strips. These are 1.8 cm brick strips which require 70% less raw materials and 50% less energy than the production of traditional facing bricks. Soon we will bake them in an energy-efficient kiln. This will reduce energy consumption by a further 70%.
The next step is low-carbon, neutral and even negative bricks. To this end, we are innovating our production process and focusing on sustainable energy. In Lanklaar, we have installed our first windmill and, together with KU Leuven, we are looking into how we can produce hydrogen gas with the help of solar panels.
Water-permeable clay brick pavers against flooding
From extreme drought to heavy rainfall and even flooding, we are having to deal with it more and more often. That is why we at Vandersanden are not only reducing our CO2 emissions, but also working on climate-adaptive solutions. For instance, we developed Drainflow®: water-passable, baked pavers which allows rainwater to infiltrate into the soil during extreme rainfall. The authentic look and quality of traditional bricks are retained, but with much less risk of flooding.
We believe it is important to constantly question ourselves. Vandersanden wants to look long term - generations ahead, even. This requires us to have an eye on changes that will have a major impact in the long term.
RoboBrick®, a total solution for facade construction
RoboBrick® is a tailor-made total solution for the industrial builder that automatically bonds brick slips to various substrates and that we fully integrate into new and existing production lines. We developed the industrial facade system in close cooperation with our customers and suppliers.
It includes customized brick slip packaging and two-component adhesive, BrickDesigner software and a tracking and monitoring system. We offer a 20-year full guarantee through a quality assurance system. Moreover, up to 60% less raw materials and energy are required.
Coated bricks: 25-year guarantee against gypsum formation
Mortars have changed over the past few decades for better processing. These changed compositions can lead to efflorescence as a result of the weather: gypsum is the most persistent form.
To combat this, we have developed an environmentally friendly process to make facing bricks water-repellent, while retaining their vapour permeability. We coat bricks to protect them from substances in the mortar that could case efflorescence and give a 25-year guarantee.
