Tips for designing a completely green garden

If you’re lucky enough to have a spacious garden, you’ll know that despite its beauty, it comes with its own set of challenges. These tips will help you.

Preserving unity

A big garden needs a big gesture. You need to find a way to connect the different parts of the garden. This could be a line of sight, a garden path, or perhaps even an avenue of trees. A central lawn or pond can also help to melt the different areas of the garden together. In a large garden, few things work better than a large pond. Perhaps even that swimming pool that you’ve quietly been dreaming about your whole life? You could also consider combining pond and pool into a natural swimming lake.

Introduce variation to the garden

A large garden offers ample opportunity, so make a list of all of the things that you want to do in your garden. Perhaps you’d like a vegetable garden, a meadow of flowers, or an area in which the children can play. Each use can have its own place. You can also add variation with light and shade, open and concealed. Think carefully about the paving. There are numerous places that you could lay a patio, allowing you to enjoy the sun or shade at different times of the day.

Differences in height in your garden.

A good way to make a large garden more exciting is to work with differences in height. Consider planting at different heights, but also raising and lowering the ground level. Vary higher shrubs with lower perennials and add in a small tree as an eye-catcher. From a raised patio, you can enjoy beautiful views over the entire garden. You can also create a lowered seating area with a bench and fire basket for intimate summer evenings.

Garden maintenance

A large garden automatically means more maintenance. Nevertheless, you can minimise it by designing smartly. Considering hedges or linden trees? Then the job will no doubt be more challenging! But if you opt for natural planting, nature will do most of the work for you. A large lawn can be mowed quickly with a good lawnmower. There are also countless flowering ground coverers than can suppress weeds and create green.
