Pirrouet®: CO2-negative facing bricks

Our most revolutionary new development is Pirrouet® CO2-negative facing bricks. Façade bricks that absorb no less than 60 kg of CO2 per ton of material during the production process. During curing, the CO2 forms a permanent bond with the materials that contain Calcium. With Pirrouet®, we are not only taking the next step in making our production process more sustainable (one of the commitments of our Together to Zero sustainability promise) we are also offering a facing brick with a distinctive aesthetic. With a choice of nine different colours, every facade can have a unique, aesthetically pleasing look.

Innovative production process of Pirrouet®

For the production of Pirrouet®, we mix mineral residues from the steel industry with sand, dyes and water, and then press this into a brick mould. We let the paver harden in a conditioned room with a high concentration of CO2. The CO2 reacts with calcium oxide-containing materials to form carbonates. This permanent bond creates a hard limestone-like brick.

What are the advantages of Pirrouet®?

  • CO2-negative product: at least 60 kg of CO2 is absorbed per ton of Pirrouet® facing bricks during the production process, which permanently bonds with the materials containing calcium during the hardening of the bricks.

  • CO2-neutral production: to complete the sustainable process, we largely generate green electricity ourselves via our solar panels and our own wind turbine.

  • Reduced use of primary raw materials: up to 80% of the raw materials we use are sourced from residual flows from the steel industry.

  • Less waste: by reusing residual products, we are reducing the amount of waste.

  • High dimensional stability: Pirrouet® facing bricks are extremely dimensionally stable.

  • Extremely high quality standards: these sustainable facing bricks meet the strict European ceramic standards.

  • Available in nine different colours, each with a unique aesthetic.

Pirrouet® sizes and colours

The Pirrouet® starting range includes facing bricks in nine colours with a specific surface texture and a transparent protective coating. The bricks will go into production in the second quarter of 2024, in the new factory we are building for this purpose. To produce Pirrouet® as sustainably as possible, we only pigment approximately one centimetre of the top layer: 1 stretcher is colored. 25% of the brick is fully coloured, with one textured header and stretcher side suitable for corners and special applications.

They are available in four sizes:

  • LF50-S: +/- 240 x 72 x 50 mm (most sustainable format)
  • WF: +/- 210 x 100 x 50 mm
  • DF: +/- 215 x 100 x 65 mm
  • XXL44-S: +/- 440 x 72 x 44 mm

Production location in Lanklaar

We are currently building a new factory in Lanklaar for the production of Pirrouet®, our CO2-negative facing bricks. From 2024, this new location will enable us to produce 30-35 million Pirrouet® facing bricks annually while also consuming CO2 during the curing process. This new product will help us save up to 80% in primary raw materials and significantly reduce the waste mountain. A major step on our way to a sustainable future. Together to Zero.

Together to Zero

Together to Zero is our promise to operate and produce completely CO2-free by 2050. Together with our partners, we will make this happen in several areas, reflected in eight domains. We are taking concrete steps to reduce our CO2 emissions to zero. It is a challenge we take on together.
