Rainbow White brick

Limewashed brick for a unique effect

Limewashing is an age-old technique for plastering interior and exterior walls. It gives a matte, white, or coloured chalk layer over the brick. Limewashing requires knowledge and experience, and is rather time-consuming. But, there is another way. Discover the limewashed brick.

Limewashing, a white or coloured layer of chalk on your brick

Today, there are more than 100 different colours of brick and colour nuances on the market. But even after firing, there are a still a variety of techniques that can be used to colour a brick , including limewashing. The principle is fairly straightforward. A mixture of chalk, water, and sand is applied to the façade and allowed to cure. Limewashing is a labour-intensive job as the mixture needs to be applied in different layers. Thankfully, there is a good alternative that can save time.

A limewashed brick has an extra cement layer. The cement layer is applied to the fired brick, which gives the same effect as a limewashed façade. It is important that the base stone has a similar colour. At Vandersanden, you can find a wide range of colours under the name Rainbow and Snowdust. Time for you to get to know them.

Rainbow or Snowdust, it’s up to you

With Rainbow , the limewash layer completely covers the brick giving it the pure effect in White or Silver. Snowdust is different. The layer is thinner, allowing the colour of the base brick to show through. Here, we use a brick with a different base colour, such as the yellow/grey Hubertus or the dark brown Umber. This creates an attractive interplay of tints.

Limewash effect for a traditional and modern construction style

The limewash facing brick is well suited to a combination with a traditional building style. But really, you don’t need to apply a style label to most bricks. In modern architecture, Rainbow and Snowdust can help to create a wholly separate effect. You could opt to bond the stones for a more contemporary look. Tip: with our colour selector, you can see different joint effects in combination with the colour and style of your favourite brick. This tool will help you to find the right stone for your project quickly.

With a limewashed facing brick, you get the effect of a limewashed façade, but with less work.
