The look of your pavers
Decorative paving has a big impact on the feel of your garden. The different colours, production methods, sizes, and laying patterns all provide for a unique appearance. Choose the garden paver that best matches your garden.
Production method
The garden range from Vandersanden contains two types of clay paver: the extruded paver and the moulded paver. They are named for the way in which they are shaped before entering the kiln for firing.
Wirecut
Wirecut garden pavers are made with an extruder. A vacuum press produces a continuous clay beam with clean, rectangular dimensions. The beam is then cut into blocks of the correct size in a fully automatic process. Extruded pavers have a sleek appearance and striking colours. By contrast, tumbled variants (Antica) have a rustic, nostalgic appearance.
Moulded
Moulded pavers are shaped by pressing clay into moulds. The mould is turned after being compressed, so that the brick can fall out and dry. After drying, the brick enters the kiln. Moulded bricks are known for their natural appearance. In addition, they have spacers on the sides to increase permeability to water.
Colours and textures
Pavers are a natural product, and each one is unique. The colour of the paver is determined by the natural ingredients in our clay mixture, but the firing process also plays an important role. The hues range from red to brown and purple to black. One colour is more eclectic that the other. We even see blue, luminescent reflections. Sleek, uniform colours are also possible.
Depending on the colour and the size, your paver will have an unsanded, scraped, or sand-covered texture. Over time, the sand will wear and the underlying colour of the stone will begin to show through. Tumbling the stones after firing, such as with the Antica brick, helps to create a truly unique appearance. Tumbling gives your garden paving a rustic and nostalgic feel. Untumbled stones have a sleeker appearance.
Sizes and laying patterns
The size is also important to the look of your paving. Narrower sizes have a classic, refined look. The more square, larger sizes have a sleeker and more robust appearance.
The major advantage of clay paving is its timeless nature and ability to match any style of garden. You can play with patterns and edging to suit your own unique tastes. The laying pattern also determines also the strength of the paving. An elbow or twill pattern is ideal for a driveway.
