What is an EPD or environmental product declaration?
EPD stands for Environmental Product Declaration. It is a document that presents the full life cycle of a building material in a standardised way. It makes comparing different materials easier.
EPD or the ecological impact of a product
The EPD or Environmental Product Declaration is a document that presents the results of the LCA or Life Cycle Assessment in a standardised way. An LCA examines how environmentally friendly a product is, taking into account the full life cycle. What raw materials is it made from and how are they extracted, how is the product manufactured, transported and used, how can it be reused or recycled. All these aspects together determine the environmental impact of a product, which is reflected in the EPD. The independent and certified organisation Enperas draws up the EPD and makes its calculation based on real data and industry standards.
What is an EPD for?
The EPD objectively shows the environmental impact of a product and thus allows products to be compared from an environmental point of view: how much water and energy is used to make the product, what CO2 emissions does it release. This makes it easier to make a choice as a consumer. An environmental product declaration also indicates where there is room for improvement, allowing companies to take responsibility for their own environmental impact.
The environmental product declaration (EPD) of Pirrouet®
To establish the EPD of our CO2-negative Pirrouet® facing bricks, one year's production data must be analysed. The EPD is expected in the course of 2026.
Pirrouet® does already have an EP (Environmental Profile), drawn up in the same way as the EPD but - pending the actual data – it is based on calculated values. According to that EP, Pirrouet®'s CO2 emissions are negative: per tonne of facing bricks, 60 kg of CO2 is absorbed.
