Insulating your exterior wall – an absolute must

A poorly insulated building increases energy consumption, which is bad for the environment and bad for your budget. Extra insulation can help you to tackle heat loss. Fitting new windows and adding roof insulation are common measures, but did you know that insulating your exterior walls can be equally as effective?

Keeping heat inside

It’s startling to learn that on average, 26% of a house’s heat escapes through the walls, 26% through the roof, 20% through windows and doors, 15% through the floor, and 13% through ventilation and ventilation losses. What’s the best way to tackle these heat losses?

Insulating your roof is not enough

Dealing with one form of heat loss is a step in the right direction, but if you want a truly energy-efficient home, an overall approach is needed. This includes exterior wall insulation. When it comes to insulating your exterior wall, there are three options. Discover the pros and cons and consider which is best for you.

Insulating your roof is not enough

1. Insulate on the inside, lose living space.

You can insulate your exterior wall along the inside, much like a roof. It isn’t too expensive to do it, but there are some drawbacks. Thermal bridges along the floor and ceiling remain, and an insulated exterior wall no longer stores heat . In addition, you also have to compromise on valuable living space.

2. Fill the cavity, and then?

In itself, this is an easily doable method, and it’s not too expensive. There does need to be a cavity, of course, and one that is properly put in place. But this method does not eliminate existing thermal bridges. In addition, the thickness of the added insulation is limited to the thickness of the cavity – in many cases, just a few centimetres.

3. Insulate the exterior wall

Now what? Insulating your exterior wall on the outside is hands-down the best solution, and wraps your home completely in a warm layer of insulation whilst also removing thermal bridges. You can determine yourself the amount of additional insulation that you want by deciding on the thickness. And as an extra, you can also give your home a new look at the same time.

Insulating your exterior wall on the outside is not the cheapest option, but it is the most complete method with the greatest impact. It's an investment that pays for itself.

3. Insulate the exterior wall
