Can brick slips be used as a floor covering?
Can brick slips be used for floor finishing? That’s a good question. When it comes to using brick slips, we make a clear distinction between indoor and outdoor use.
Clay paver strips for indoor areas
We do not recommend using brick slips made from facing bricks as a floor covering for interiors. It is possible however to use brick slips made from clay pavers. As they are suitable for absorbing the heavy load imposed on a floor by people walking on it or from any weight that is placed on it – for example, heavy furniture. Clay paver strips are also more resistant to wear and contamination.
Slips for indoor areas are best glued to a solid surface made from screed or concrete. You can also combine them with underfloor heating.
Better not to use sand-faced pavers
It’s best to use joint mortar or sand with polymers for filling the joints between brick slips. This will ensure the floor remains elastic and usually available in a water-permeable and water-resistant variant. It’s best to avoid sanded pavers or brick slips for indoor purposes. This is because mortar residue will remain between the sanding in the brick slips and can become loose due to frequent walking on or cleaning of the floor.
Brick slips for outdoor areas?
It’s best not to use brick slips for outdoor floors as they will be frequently subject to heavy loads, rain, cold temperatures and other environmental factors. Our full pavers are therefore the best option for outdoors: they are robust, weather-resistant and therefore much longer lasting than brick slips.
