25-year guarantee against hazing
Hazing often starts as a light film which develops into a white-grey fog and can mar entire facades. Vandersanden offers a 25-year guarantee against the formation of this white film. This guarantee also applies to all our brick slips and facing bricks. So, you can rest assured – your facade will remain beautiful for many years to come.
How do we stop hazing?
Our wire-cut bricks are naturally resistant to hazing due to the closed structure of their surfaces. To protect our waterstruck and handmade bricks from these processes, we use special clays. The other types of bricks that are prone to efflorescence are coated. This makes the four visible sides of the facing brick or brick slip water repellent, so they retain their beautiful colour and appearance for a long time.
How does this white haze form?
White haze is largely caused by the efflorescence of substances in (joint) mortars. When it rains, bricks not only absorb the rainwater, they also absorb substances from the mortar. When the bricks dry up again, these substances are deposited on the visible side, resulting in an unsightly facade. In cooperation with KU Leuven, our Research & Development Department investigated the causes of hazing under various conditions, and they developed a solution.
The solution? Coatings
At Vandersanden, we have developed a process in which we treat facing bricks after the firing process with an environmentally friendly liquid. This makes the four visible sides of the bricks water repellent to a depth of about 5-15 mm. We do not coat the bedding surfaces (top and bottom) of the brick. This allows us to use the bricks in the traditional manner, using the existing mortars. Important note: The facing bricks remain vapour permeable.

- The pores of the bricks remain open, and frost-resistance is guaranteed. Moisture in the core of the brick can escape via the bedding surfaces and through evaporation along the coated visible sides.
- The coated visible sides absorbs considerably less water, reducing dirt build-up.
- You avoid the expense of having your facade cleaned. Removing the haze that forms is a job for experts. After mechanical cleaning, your facade bricks can be re-coloured, which can lead to uncertainty about the result.
At Vandersanden, we have been coating all our facing bricks that are susceptible to hazing since 2020. Our other facing bricks have a more closed surface structure. That is why we offer a 25-year guarantee against hazing on our entire range.
